Message someone
Start a one-to-one conversation from Messages or from someone's profile, then reply, edit or share files in it.
Updated Oct 27, 2026
Messages is your inbox for one-to-one conversations and groups. If you already talked with someone, the same conversation opens again.
Start a conversation
- In the sidebar, open Messages. On a phone, use the Messages tab at the bottom.
- Choose New, then New message.
- Type a name or email and pick the person.
- Write your message and press Enter to send it. Shift and Enter starts a new line.
You can also start from a person: on their profile, or next to their name on your Connections page, choose Message. The Message button on a profile shows once you are connected.
Who you can message
The list depends on the workspace you have open:
- In your company, you see the company's contacts and your own connections.
- In a community, you see its members, and the conversation stays in that community's inbox.
- Otherwise, you see your connections, and the search finds other people by name or email.
In a conversation
- Use the paperclip (Attach file) to send files and images, or the microphone (Record voice note) when nothing is typed.
- Hover a message and open its menu to Reply, Reply in Thread, Forward or Pin Message. On your own messages you can also Edit or Unsend.
- Choose Draft reply to have AI write a reply from the conversation. Pick a tone, choose Generate Draft, then Insert into composer to edit it before sending. Each draft uses some of your AI credits.
Keep your inbox tidy
Use the filters at the top of the list: All, Unread, Groups, Threads and Archived. Open the menu on a conversation to Mark as read, Mute, Archive or Delete it.
